In our interview section this month (by Ewa Sikorska), we meet the professional Bikini Fitness athelte, the Russian based in Budapest, Karina Gavrikova.
Ewa: Hi Karina! Your competition history is incredible! In only 3 years you’ve competed 50 times with 29 gold medals! That’s awesome!, How did you do it? How did you get started in world of fitness?
Karina: Thank you, Ewa! Let me start with saying that I am incredibly grateful for this amazing opportunity to talk to you today. Hearing these numbers in your question really makes me think and look back at the path I walked. Not that I didn’t think about it before, but I think I never really had to codify it into how-to.
Ewa: You’re welcome:) Let us know your fascinating story.
Karina: Once I started to compete, I was in go-go-go mode, rarely taking time to slow down. It was clear for me that this was the path I wanted to take, using every opportunity I had for that, and I was just really hungry for it. Let me take a step back to explain what I mean. As long as I remember, I was always active throughout my life. At school I competed in running & basketball in district and regional levels, and in parallel I was following my passion as a dance performer and competitor. Competing was always a big part of my life.
Ewa: I may say the seeds had been planted. This is how champions are born.
Karina: Competing was always a big part of my life. Since dancing was my first love and passion, I was planning to do it professionally. Along the way, I discovered Zumba and became a Zumba instructor however due to a knee injury, I had to stop fitness all together for couple of years.
Ewa: It must be a terrible experience for someone who is active. What did you do then?
Karina: I was afraid to start again as it was even hard to walk at the beginning. However, the idea of getting back to the competitive arena would keep me searching for alternatives to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle. Slowly, after a 2 year break, I started to workout at home, repeating bodyweight workouts I would find online or on social media accounts of Fitness Models – this is how I got hooked up on a different part of fitness – bodybuilding, and became obsessed with an idea to get back on the competitive stage, this time as Bikini Fitness Athlete.
Ewa: But exercising at home isn’t enough to be ready for the stage.
Karina: Yes, that’s why in the summer of 2015 I finally had enough courage to make the next step and go to the gym for the very first time! With the huge help and support from my friends, I discovered the whole new world of barbells and dumbbells, weights, reps & sets. Once I felt ready for the next level, I reached out to my current coach, Berkes Lazslo, who has been coaching me since April 2016. He believed in me and supported me from the very first moment I joined the team. His support and the support of the team was a huge factor for me to push as hard as I could to reach the best possible results that I could achieve.
